Befriending
Over the last seventeen years we have been taking lonely and housebound folk for outings, boat trips, garden centres, theatres and shopping centres, and we've held very special Christmas lunches and summer tea parties. We are concerned with the plight of people who are not only housebound but are lonely, live in isolation and are vulnerable. One of our solutions is to hold a teleconferencing book club where the same book is delivered to a group of about 8 people and a month later they are all connected to a telephone conference when they discuss the book and make friends with other isolated people. This book club is organised by Barbara Davis and has been so successful that we are in the process of setting up further groups
In addition to this we are in the process of setting up a network of befriending throughout the borough of Barnet, specifically by using telephone contact. This project will enable everyone to be of help, with able, disabled and housebound members calling as befrienders from anywhere in the borough. RSVP have been running a similar very successful scheme in the Borough of Camden for several years. This project is widely supported and we have been awarded start up funding by the borough. For further information contact us on 020 8445 2780. The project operates from 303 Ballards Lane, North Finchley.
