Disabled people working as volunteers

Through our work we have realised that people with disabilities get the most benefit from volunteering in their local community and yet they face a multitude of barriers to access volunteering opportunities.

As a consequence we have formed a partnership with Disability Action in the Borough of Barnet (DabB), and have set up a project to offer disabled people the opportunity of volunteering in mainstream opportunities around Barnet. This project is called Active Volunteering by Disabled People.

This project was started in Dec 2004 and has been an enormous success, at the end of the second year we had exceeded our first three year targets and had to move to larger premises. This project is enthusiastically managed by Seema Chopra who joined us in June 2009.

Seema can be contacted on 020 8445 2780

Sheila Moorcroft, who was asked to give a report on the first year's progress on our project, has produced a 50 page evaluation in June 2005. To access this report click here.

Sheila has more than 20 years experience of managing and conducting single and multi-client research based consulting projects for clients in the public, private and voluntary sectors, in the UK and Europe. She has considerable experience of working with organisations involved in supporting older people and in working directly with disabled people.

It was announced on 21st October 2008 that The National Lottery had awarded £263,971 to fund this project for the next 5 years. This is a huge compliment to what we have achieved and gives us the impetus to make further progress.
